Log Cabin Love

Log Cabin Love, originally uploaded by janel m.

I have decided that my next quilt will be a log cabin quilt. I love these bright, funky, and crazy style ones that I found on Flickr but I think that I am going to make a very traditional one!
Here are some facts that I have learned about the traditional log cabin quilt :)
1. The yellow or red center would represent a hearth in a home (red) or a candle left burning to guide a family member home at night (yellow).
* I am going to do a red center!
2. In sewing the log cabin block, it is sewn from the center out representing the building of a home, one log at a time surrounding the hearth/heart in the middle.
3. Traditionally the block had a light side (happiness) and dark side
(sorrow) to represent life in a home.
4. The Log Cabin quilt became popular in the United States by the mid-nineteenth century.
5. The Log Cabin style of stacked strips dates back thousands of years to ancient Egyptian tombs, where mummies have been found wrapped in burial cloths with a recognizable Log Cabin motif. The block became popular in the United States during the Civil War, when Log Cabin quilts were raffled to raise money for the Union Army.

So yeah, this is what I am planning for my next quilt :) I got some fabrics that were actually from the mid-ninteenth century too so it's really going to look very traditional!!
Also, I am thinking about making quilts to sell in the Etsy shop. I am not going to do it if there isn't a big interest for it. Is this something that you all would be interested in. I am thinking baby quilts, lap quilts, custom quilts, etc. Lots of bright and funky ones mostly (like my last few). I love making quilts, especially for others. I think that this would be a great way to make some extra money and do something that I love!! What do you think??? Please leave me some feedback on this!!
Thanks friends!
xoxo

  4. Great idea!! Quilts are also a good raffle item when you are raising money for charity. Thanks for your research on the log cabin, I had forgotten about the light/dark meaning. So true to life. I can't wait to see your progress!
