Last week my dad taught me how to do "professional" book binding :) He's making all of his own journals these days and I love it!!The coolest part is that he learned from reading a book that was published in the 1800's. They are still using the same tools and techniques today!
There were a ton of photos from the process so I made a super quick (un-edited) video of everything that we did.
Our finished product is the most beautiful leather bound journal. It's the perfect size to throw in your bag and take with you, and it's so incredibly professional (if I do say so myself). My dad had the idea to give our first journal together away as a giveaway on Run With Scissors, and although Im sad to see it go, I am excited to offer it to you all :)
So, here is the deal...
All you have to do is:
* leave a comment on this post telling me one awesome thing about your dad (or any other significant male in your life).
This giveaway will end Wednesday November 16.

I love it! I've been reading up on bookbinding so much and I keep watching that episode of 'How It's Made' on bookbinding too....so amazing.
ReplyDeleteAnyways my favorite thing about my Dad is the cool Johnny Cash vide people get from him, all black clothes and 50's music? Yes please. He is the greatest!
oh my word, I got goosebumps as I watched the video! that sounds crazy, I know - but leather bound journals are "my thing"!
ReplyDeleteI'd have to tell you about a male professor of mine (that I've known for a while). he's extremely inspiring and pushes me to where he knows I can be. I'm very fortunate to have him in my life!
You're Dad does amazing work. Can you tell me what that wood thing he's using is called?
ReplyDeleteMy Dad is awesome because he's always there to give me advice if I need it. He lives 2 hrs. away from me but we talk every week. We visit each other as much as we can.
Hi Janel, I want a journal!
ReplyDeleteMy Dad worked so hard to make sure his 6 children always had the things they needed. He would go without his needs all the time. He also was a musician, and would play his harmonica for us at bedtime as we snuggled down in our beds.
My Dad played his harmonica when we were snuggled down in bed. He worked two jobs so his 6 children had the things we needed, even if his shoes had holes in them. He did volunteer work and taught us to think of those who have little or nothing before we thought of ourselves.
ReplyDeleteJanel, I need a journal! CathyW.
This is wonderful! I'm excited to enter the drawing. Your Dad is such a great guy (and you are like him)!!!!!
ReplyDeleteOne incredible thing about my Dad is that he is a giving person. He is also a Veteran. When I called him on Veteran's Day to tell him "Thank You" for serving our country, he was genuinely grateful.
I'm obsessed with this giveaway! The thing I love most about my dad is how charismatic he is! He never fails to make me laugh, he makes friends with everyone from the bagger at the grocery store to the guy in front of him in line at Starbucks. We have so much fun together and I am 110% a daddy's girl. Love him! : )

This is awesome! My Father was murdered when I was 2 years old. But from what I can have heard he did everything he could to provide for his 7 kids. I love that I have a piece of him within me. Thank you for sharing this great insight into bookbinding!
ReplyDeleteMy Dad is gone now (and I miss him terribly). He was a man of many talents. Among other things, he was a beekeeper - having learned from his father.
ReplyDeleteEvery time I see a honey bee, I think of my Dad and all his hives (and of watching him harvest the honey).
:) Linda
It's so cool that you and your dad get to do things together! =D
ReplyDeleteThis is for my Grandfather: He loved me no matter what.
Janel, this is soooo cool!!! My dad is wonderful. He has always built, fixed, made everything! Just recently, he's taught me how to work with some tools, and he's a great teacher! We're even going to build a knife together! I'll be giving it to my hubby for X-mas :) shhhhh, don't tell ;)

oh, and thank your dad for his sweet heart for giving away your lovely creation! What a kind spirit!
ReplyDeleteWhat a terrific project!
ReplyDeleteMy favorite thing about my dad is he always asks me (out of everybody) to go to basketball games with him. He played in college and so going to his "team" play is always fun for us.
how awesome!!! my dad is my best friend and influenced me in nearly all i do! would love to win! camille.yanair@yahoo.com
ReplyDeleteI just completed my Masters in Library & Information Science this past May, so needless to say, I love me some books. ;)
ReplyDeleteMy grandpa had one of the strongest work ethics I've ever seen.
My Dad is very history oriented, lol. When I was little he 'dragged' me to all these places where my ancestors grew up, lived, worked ... and made art even. Now that I am older, I realize I would give anything to do that with him again. But there never is enough time, is there?
ReplyDeletemy dad is AWESOME because he is my dad! no matter what kind of problem i am having he always give me the right advice. he will even talk about guy problems with me! he is the best and i miss him more and more each day since i dont live in texas anymore...but it def makes the holidays way more fun b/c we get to spend alot of time with eachother

My dad's a doctor, and all but one set of stitches (the one for an operation he wasn't allowed to do bc he's my dad) from various falls and bumps were done by him!
ReplyDeleteWhat a fantastic project you did with your dad! I love learning something new and especially when taught by a loved one.
ReplyDeleteMy dad is a self-taught artist and incredibly talented, even though he's wheelchair bound and lost use of his dominant hand. He draws lefty now and can't really perceive color, but what amazing work with a ballpoint pen!
Thank you for the opportunity to win such a prize!

Oh wow awesome!
ReplyDeleteMy dad is one of the most amazing, humble, godly men I know. He's my hero. He has always treated me respectfully, even when I was little. I know I can go to him with anything. And best of all, he seeks God with his whole heart and humbly does as instructed.

i love that my dad is a hard worker and really cares that my siblings and I have a better life growing up than he did

My dad is the one who noticed my interest in art and shortly after, I was taking independent art classes when I was young. He also makes some amazing things out of wood and a pocket knife.
ReplyDeleteHe even made me a figure/sculpture of one of my cartoon characters I had to make for one of those said classes.
My dad is my hero. He has always been there for my and has loved me unconditionally. I"m so blessed that we live within 5 minutes so my two sons can have their papa has an role model too!

My dad wasn't really a part of my life, but my husband is an awesome hands on dad!
ReplyDeleteThis is so cool!! My dad and I have started a tradition of cooking Thanksgiving together. I look forward to it all year! My mom doesn't like to cook so it's something fun that I get to do that only my dad and I share.
ReplyDeleteAwesome job!!!! My Dad is my best friend in the entire world. We call each other anytime we need to vent and know that no one else will understand. Thanks for a great giveaway! I love what a close relationship you have with your Dad. It's so touching! <3
ReplyDeleteThat is SOOO cool!
ReplyDeleteMy Grandpa was the greatest man I ever knew. Sadly he passed away this past March and I miss him so very much

I don't know if I can think of only one great thing about my dad. He's my best friend, and is always willing to help. Together we've renovated my houses and built cool stuff. We also go on dates every Saturday: garage sales and breakfast. I love it.
ReplyDeleteJust this weekend, he helped me put up a chain link fence. I'd be lost without him!!!

I love this!! What a special activity you & your dad got to share doing!!
ReplyDeleteMy dad has been working since he was 12 years old, has since retired, but still leaves the house everyday. When I ask him why is derriere is so flat (a joke in the family) he says: Because I've literally worked it off! So, an awesome thing about my dad...he's got a way with words....
wow, so neat janel!!
ReplyDeleteone awesome thing about my dad is that we are very different people but we also have a lot of similarities...if that makes sense at all? i love all of the things that i see in myself that i got from my dad. and it's nice knowing that even though we're so very different, we get along so well!
After my parents split (long time ago now) my dad and I started going to a local playhouse. We have been going 12 years now. We get season tickets, have dinner before hand, very fun. I like that it's our thing. :)
ReplyDeleteThat's so awesome!! My dad always helps if I need wood cut for a new project, or sanded or painted or anything like that.
ReplyDeleteSo cool...must add this to the list of things I must try to make one day!
ReplyDeleteThe greatest thing about my dad- the way he could tell a story, and his sarcasm.
Luckily I inherited his sarcasm, but I dont know how much people enjoy hearing my stories!
Just ONE awesome thing about my dad? Its too hard to pick. He does more work by accident in a day, then most people do on purpose. He's a coalminer and a farmer and is addicted to tractor auctions and the Grand Ole Opty. I am blessed with the best dad ever :)
ReplyDeleteOne of the reasons my dad is awesome is because despite his age, he's still really fit! If anything, he's gotten younger over the years :]
ReplyDeleteI have never really had a dad or father or my Grandpa Sam acted as my main male role model in life. He was always teaching me things and introduced me to non-girly fun things.. like exploring in the woods looking for different kinds of bugs or doing science projects at home. I remember staying the night at my grandparents house and each time he had a few different science projects ready to go to teach me about something :)
ReplyDeleteSo cool!
ReplyDeleteMy dad grew up lobster diving and free diving. Even after a lung surgery, he can dive and hold his breath for an insanely long time. :)
My dad is awesome because he always tries to keep up with the news. He started to use computers in the very beginning and he always tries to keep himself updated.
ReplyDeleteWhy for am I just now seeing this :(
ReplyDeleteI soooo wanna to learn book binding!
xo,
