30 day journal challenge!

I'm excited!!!!
It looks like many of you want to do the 30 day journal challenge along with me and that makes me soooo happy!!!
How about we get started on Monday morning, June 14. That will take us all of the way to July 13 as our last prompt together.
Here is the low-down...
* I will post the prompt and my journal page each morning (before 10:00 am cst)
* I will be posting all of these here, on my blog for everyone to see :)
* My pages are going to strictly be pen and paper but I want you to feel creatively free to add in whatever you want :)
* I have created a Flickr Group where we can all share our pages right here. Join it now!
* I also would love for you to post your pages on your blog as well with a link in the comments so that we can check them out as soon as they are posted!!
* Some people asked about supplies and prefrences. Here are my personal picks:
My very favorite pen, that I have used in my journals, since college, are the Papermate flair felt tip pens. These pens come in a varitey of colors:

You can use them all, or you can choose your signature color :) I am pretty boring I guess because my signature color is always black.

It's classic :)
For a journal I will be using a moleskin journal that I picked up at Barnes and Noble. It is the large (size: 5.25 x 8.25 in), kraft color notebook with blank pages.

You can usually pick these up in sets of three. I chose the Kraft color because I want to personalize a bit!
Or, you can search for a cute "already decorated" moleskin on Etsy from some very talented artists :) I usually purchase moleskins from Etsy but this time, I am going to make my own :) Here is a link to some lovely moleskins on Etsy, if that's the route you want to go :)

Eeek! I am really excited about this little adventure that we will be taking together!!
The first prompt will be going live next Monday :) Be there or be square.
Love you.

journal

**Sooo, I did absolutely nothing today. like, NOTHING. In fact, I didn't even get out of bed until like 2:00. That is so uncharacteristic of me but I wasn't feeling so well and reading in bed sounded really good.
Can you believe that I have managed to read 10 books in the last 3 weeks? Insanity.
**The sunglasses in the above picture are my temporary pair until I find my dream SATC pair for cheap. These were five dollars and have already fallen apart a bit but I still love them for right now :)
**This past week was the last week for the Tell Your Story art journaling class that I was taking :( This was definitely a great class, very fresh and inspirng :)
Here are my last few pages that I created for the class:
Enjoy!
The prompt for this one was to strictly use your pen only to describe the day, no other supplies:

The prompt for this next one was, Choices.

and finally, this page was all about Negative space...

Yay! loved the class and I am so happy that I will have the journal to commemorate this awesome time in my life.
**I am thinking about doing a 30 day journal challenge on my blog where I will share a prompt and page each day for 30 days.
Mine is going to be strictly pen and paper, like a doodle a day or something that goes along with the prompt. It will also focus a bit on typography as well :)
I did something like this once before and really loved it.
I would love for you all to follow along and do the prompts with me!!
Is this something that you all would be interested in??
If I here back from enough people who are interested, I will do it as a blog thing and not just a personal thing.
What do you think??

What is geocaching?

(above picture found here, the rest below are mine :D)
I have seen this question come up a lot in my comments so I thought that tonight I would write a little post about it and try to explain it in the best way that I can :)
Geocaching is a high-tech version of treasure hunting.
What you will need to be a geocacher:
1. A GPS for plugging in coordinates and leading you to the cache.
Instead of a GPS, I use the Geocaching iPhone app.

It is 9.99 for the app but totally worth it because GPS's can be like hundreds of dollars.
(For the app just search geocaching in the app store and it's there)
2. A free account at geocaching.com

That is it!!

So, here is the down-low in the simplest form :)
1. You go to geocaching.com (or the iphone app but for the purpose of this tutorial, I am going to base the rest of this on the website) and search for nearby geocaches in your area. BTW- there are geocaches placed all over the world, millions of them. I heard that there is even one in one of the Great Pyramids :)

I usually just search by my zip-code and what is out there.
2. Check out your search results:

This is just a little snippet of what shows up in my area. There are literally hundreds of them within about 20 minutes from my house.
So, with this visual, you can see the size of the geocache, the name, when it was placed, and the last time that it was found. The check marks indicate that I have already found them.
3. Click on a cache that you would want to find :) I will use my geocache as an example. You can click here to see it.
This page will give you the coordinates of the cache (once you have an account) and a more detailed description of what you are looking for.
A geocache is usually a Tupperware container or an old film canister or really anything, hiding in disguise. I was blown away by the ones that I have found that have literally been right in front of my face every day and I never knew they were hiding there!!
Here are some pictures of different geocaches that I have found, to give you a visual of what I am talking about.

See, they can be litereally anything. Some are hidden soooo well it's crazy. Today my dad found one attached to a bridge that was just a magnet the size of a fingernail. He opened it up and BAM, a geocache log.
4. Load the coordinates into your GPS and follow it to your destination!! (The iphone app, has a map too and a lot of good visuals to get you there, plus all of the caches are already on there and so you can just click on the one you want and go!)
5. Ok, so depending on the size of the geocache you will find different things in them. Each geocache, no matter the size, should have a log book in it for you to sign that you were there. Sometimes they are sooo tiny that it's just a little rolled piece of paper and no writing utensil, so I always carry a pen with me just in case. In the bigger caches, you will find the treasure :)
Now when I say treasure , I don't want you to get your hopes up!
Usually, there are tokens, little toys, buttons, etc. from people inside. Here are some treasures that I have collected:

I am sooooo motivated by the swag, it's hilarious :)
The important rule is that you must leave something if you take something. I alway leave either a little plastic suitcase (my profile name is Ms. Wanderlust on there) or I leave one of my iheartrunwithscissors.com buttons :)
There are trackable items that you can purchase like a geocoin. These are cool because people register the number on them and then you can watch where they travel to.
6. Sign the log, trade swag, and head to the next one!!
7. When you get back home, you can log which geocaches that you found!! There are little tokens that you can earn for different incriments that you find. I loooove prizes so I am definitely striving to hit 100 geocaches found really soon so that I can order a little geocoin that commemorates that for me :)

So, that is it. It's my newest obsession. I have found so many neat places in my own city that I have never been to before and it gets you outside, excercising, enjoying life :)
I love it!!
If my explanation was too wordy or whatever here are two little videos that I took off of the geocaching.com website that explain it more visually :)

and

Both great :)
Oh my goodness you guys, I adore this hobby and I hope that some of you decide to try it out yourselves. If you do, you must tell me!!! If you have any other questions, please ask and I will try to answer as best as I can :)
Adventure is out there!!
Have fun!

And here is another little peek at some embroidery pieces on vintage fabric that I am making for my etsy shop!!

so exciting my friends.
Have an amazing Wednesday!!
I am hoping that the rain holds off long enough so that I can go to the pool this morning!!

01 June 2010

check!

It's that time again! Time to look back at goals from last month and time to create some new goals for this month!
Here is a look at last month's goals :)

Goals For May:
1. read a book :) I read SEVEN books this month :)
2. reach my short goal of finding 50 geocaches
3. be completely finished with everything at school by the last day so I don't have to go back over the summer :)
4. hang my stinkin peg board!!
5. Make a quilt for Spring

OMg!! I did all of them!! I am soooo excited :) Technically I only found 49 geocaches but there was one that I found, that I couldn't sign because a huge bird was sitting on it. Crazy!! So, that is why my little widget over there -----> only says 49.
And now, here are some very (non-ambitious) goals for the month of June :)

Goals for June:
1. water walk at the pool
2. read 2 books
3. finish my huge painting
4. get 10 geocache finds

Ok, and that is that!! I will be back on July 1 to let you know how I did with these goals :)
I hope you had a great Tuesday.
I spent my first day at the pool and had my first concession stand soft pretzel of the season as well.
Perfect!
love you.
